Britain: 30 Days of Rain in 24 Hours

Extreme Weather

The big soak replaced the big freeze yesterday as ferocious downpours brought havoc to much of Britain.

Families were evacuated and drivers rescued after the South of England was hit with a month's worth of rain in just 24 hours.

Most of the region was on flood alert as the deluge - combined with melting snow - caused widespread chaos.

London, Kent and Hampshire saw up to 35mm of rain between Monday evening and yesterday morning. Their average for the whole February is 40 to 60mm. Northolt, Middlesex, saw 38mm.

The Environment Agency issued 272 flood alerts and sent out more than 50,000 flash flood warnings by text or phone.
